Dame Joanna Lumley was born on May 1, 1946, which makes her 80 years old as of October 2026. This birth date is confirmed by authoritative records including the Library of Congress and Britannica . The question of how old is Joanna Lumley arises frequently because her career has spanned more than five decades across modelling, television, film, and activism.
The Exact Birth Date and Age Breakdown
Lumley was born in Srinagar, Kashmir, in what was then British India and is now part of India . Her full name is Joanna Lamond Lumley, and her father served with the British army’s 6th Gurkha Rifles . The Library of Congress authority record lists her birth date as 1946-05-01, providing a standardised reference point that libraries and archives use worldwide .
Britannica explicitly states her age as 80 in its current entry, aligning with the date calculation . In late April 2026, BBC Radio 2 broadcast a special programme titled “Joanna Lumley at the BBC” that was described as a celebration of her 80th birthday . This official broadcaster acknowledgment corroborates the timeline and confirms that the milestone fell on or around May 1, 2026.
Some online sources display outdated figures. The IMDb FAQ page for Lumley lists her as 78 years old, a discrepancy that likely stems from cached or unupdated content rather than a different birth date . The same IMDb page, however, correctly states her birth date as May 1, 1946, which resolves the inconsistency when the current date is applied .
Why the Age Question Matters: A Career of Unusual Longevity
Lumley’s professional life began in the 1960s as a model before she transitioned to acting . Her first notable film appearance came in 1969 as a Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service . She then spent several years in smaller television roles, including a stint on Coronation Street in 1973, before achieving widespread fame as Purdey in The New Avengers from 1976 to 1977 .
Her defining role arrived in 1992 when she was cast as Patsy Stone in Absolutely Fabulous, the BBC sitcom created by Jennifer Saunders . The character, a chain-smoking and hard-drinking fashion director, earned Lumley multiple BAFTA awards and became a cultural touchstone in British comedy . She and Saunders revived the roles for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie in 2016, demonstrating the enduring appeal of a character she first played in her mid-forties .
Beyond acting, Lumley is known for her 2009 campaign supporting Gurkha veterans’ right to settle in Britain, a cause connected to her family background . She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995 and elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours List . These honours reflect a public career that has remained relevant well into what many would consider retirement age.Quick Bio: Joanna Lumley

A Note on Source Reliability
The question of a celebrity’s age can produce conflicting answers online because different pages update at different times. For Lumley, the most reliable sources converge on a single date: the Library of Congress, Britannica, and the National Library of Israel all record May 1, 1946 . The BBC’s 2026 birthday programming provides independent confirmation that the 80th birthday milestone was recognised by a major broadcaster .
When a source such as IMDb displays a lower age, the discrepancy is best understood as a maintenance issue rather than evidence of a different birth date . Readers seeking a quick and accurate answer should rely on the institutional records and the 2026 birthday coverage, both of which point to the same conclusion.
